Do Not Give Up!

Our ability to inherit God’s promises includes circumstances that require us to persevere until those promises are fulfilled. This requires both patience and supernatural courage. God grants us the ability to be patient in these times of waiting, and this patience builds our character. The courage that we receive comes directly from God. Perseverance takes a tough kind of courage. We must keep our eyes on the Lord and not grow faint or let weariness cause us to despair or give up.

If there is a perceived delay in God’s intervention, we may question where God is or what He is doing, but I believe that there are rewards for us when we persevere. The love of God gets manifested in a raw but pure way that becomes treasure we store in our hearts. For me, this love has been enough of an answer, even when I have not had an answer.

Perseverance can lead to something much higher than having our immediate needs met. It can open a huge door for God’s purposes to be revealed in ourselves and others. I cannot tell you the number of times it seemed that I had no choices, but then I found myself with three simultaneously. This dilemma would be followed by seeking and waiting for God’s direction. Oftentimes, the most immediate and attractive thing was not the right thing or was not the Lord’s choosing. Our will to persevere and the courage it takes to do so position us for His best.

All the heroes of the Bible lived lives of endurance and perseverance in the Lord. Let’s look at one amazing example of this kind of spiritual bravery.

Joseph in the Old Testament (see Genesis 37–39) was the eleventh of twelve sons of a wealthy man, Jacob, and his second wife, Rachel. Jacob had a special love for Joseph, as he was born in his old age. As a young man, Joseph portrayed a work ethic and a spirit of excellence that was greater than any of his brothers. When he shared one of his dreams with them, the content of that dream caused them to despise him even more than their father’s favoritism. In their jealousy, they sold their brother to traveling merchants, and they told their father that the boy had been killed.

In Egypt, Joseph was sold again to Potiphar. Joseph found favor in this man’s house as the Lord blessed Potiphar for Joseph’s sake. One after another, the tests of endurance came. Since he was young and good-looking, Joseph attracted the attention of Potiphar’s wife, who wanted him to have an affair with her. Day after day, she used her seductive wiles on him, but he refused steadfastly, saying, “How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” (Genesis 39:9).

On a day when no one was around, she demanded that he sleep with her. Again, he refused, but she grabbed his garment as he ran off. She told her husband that Joseph had raped her,
